Biblical Counseling at Redeemer Church
What is Biblical Counseling?
Biblical counseling is the personal ministry of God's Word to those struggling with sin and suffering. Rooted in the truth of Scripture and empowered by the Holy Spirit, it aims to transform the heart, equipping individuals to live in a manner pleasing to God while navigating the realities of a fallen world.
For a more detailed explanation of biblical counseling, see the confessional statement of the [Biblical Counseling Coalition]
Counselor Training
Redeemer is not only committed to counseling the body of Christ, but our commitment is also towards equipping the body of Christ to do the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:11). Counseling those who are struggling with sin and suffering demands the best training that biblical counseling has to offer. We offer yearly classes and more to help train up biblical counselors. Our biblical counseling residency training program is intended to train those who desire to help others change and grow by relying on the sufficiency of God’s Word.
Our Core Values
1. The Sufficiency of Scripture – The Bible, given by God, is wholly sufficient to address all matters of life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). When rightly interpreted, Scripture provides everything necessary for a person to understand their need for Christ, walk in obedience to Him, and live in a God-honoring manner regardless of circumstances.
2. The Authority of God’s Word – The Bible is the ultimate standard by which all truth claims—including those from science, psychology, and philosophy—must be evaluated. Therefore, we reject counseling theories that rely on presuppositions, principles, or methodologies that contradict biblical truth (Psalm 19:7-11; 2 Timothy 3:16-17).
3. The Role of the Holy Spirit – Genuine heart transformation is dependent on the work of the Holy Spirit. Biblical counseling is not about behavior modification but spiritual renewal, requiring prayer, dependence on God, and a deep knowledge of His Word (John 16:13; Romans 12:2).
4. The Ministry of the Local Church– God has designed the local church to be a place of shepherding, encouragement, and discipleship. The church provides a community where believers care for one another and apply biblical truth together (Ephesians 4:11-16; Hebrews 10:24-25).
Biblical Counseling at Redeemer Church
Redeemer Church offers Christ-centered biblical counseling to help individuals find hope and healing through God’s Word. Our counselors—both pastors and trained lay leaders—have undergone rigorous biblical counseling training and have experience addressing a variety of personal struggles. While we are glad to offer counseling to non-members, we prioritize members of our church family.
It is important to note that our counselors are not state-licensed mental health professionals and do not operate as psychotherapists. Our approach is distinctively biblical, focusing on heart transformation rather than secular therapeutic techniques. For more details on our counseling approach, please refer to our consent form.
A Culture of Soul Care
At Redeemer, we cultivate a culture of discipleship where believers care for one another through Scripture, prayer, and practical encouragement. While every Christian has a responsibility to walk alongside others in love, some are particularly gifted to provide focused, intensive discipleship—what we call biblical counseling.
Team-Based Approach
Biblical counseling is a ministry of discipleship. To foster accountability and long-term care, we use a team-based approach. Each counselee is paired with an advocate—someone from their church community who will sit in on sessions, provide encouragement, and help apply biblical truths in daily life (Galatians 6:2; Colossians 3:16).
The Scope of Biblical Counseling
Biblical counseling addresses the full spectrum of struggles people face, including broken marriages, parenting challenges, fear, depression, addiction, anxiety, and more. Whether the issue affects one’s emotions, relationships, or overall well-being, biblical counseling provides wisdom rooted in Scripture. Ultimately, it equips individuals to navigate their relationship with God and others through the sufficiency of His Word (2 Peter 1:3).
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is Expected of Me?
For biblical counseling to be effective, we ask you to commit to the following:
- A genuine desire to grow and pursue heart transformation.
- Faithfulness in attending your scheduled counseling sessions on time.
- Diligence in completing assigned homework and practical applications between sessions.
- Regular church attendance, with at least three Sundays per month at Redeemer Church—unless you are a member of another gospel-preaching church.
Do I need to be a member of Redeemer Church to receive counseling?
We prioritize counseling for covenant members of Redeemer Church. If you are a member of another church, we require you to bring a spiritual leader from your church to serve as your counseling advocate. This individual will support you during and outside of counseling sessions.
Before beginning counseling, we also ask your pastor to complete a “Church Leader Recommendation Form.” This ensures that your church leadership is aware of your counseling and can provide ongoing spiritual care. If you are not currently connected to a church, we welcome you to attend Redeemer during the counseling process.
Why are non-members required to bring an advocate?
Advocates provide accountability and support. Scripture calls believers to be committed to a local church where they can receive care and discipleship (Hebrews 13:17). Galatians 6:2 exhorts us to “bear one another’s burdens,” and having a trusted advocate fosters lasting change beyond the counseling room.
How much does it cost?
Our biblical counseling ministry is offered free of charge as a service to our church and community.
How long is each session?
Sessions typically last between 60-90 minutes.
What about privacy?
All counseling is held in strict confidence except where there is a biblical and legal obligation to involve others (e.g., cases of abuse or criminal activity).
Will I have homework?
Yes. You will receive practical assignments to apply biblical truths between sessions. These assignments are designed to encourage heart transformation and lasting change.
How long does counseling last?
Habits and struggles are not changed overnight. Most individuals commit to regular counseling sessions for 3-4 months to allow time for lasting growth.
