The Redeemer Institute
The Redeemer Institute is a six-month theological training cohort designed to equip members with a deep and comprehensive understanding of the church. This program runs annually, meeting bi-weekly on Mondays from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM from January - June (subject to change). Participation is open to all covenant members, both men and women.
To ensure the highest value for participants, admission to the cohort requires an application process and a registration fee, which covers the cost of required books. Students will be granted a reasonable number of absences and will be responsible for completing assigned coursework. While the program is rigorous, it is not designed to overwhelm students with excessive assignments. The primary commitment will be to engage with the required readings. All sessions will be held in person, with no virtual option. The cohort will conclude with a graduation ceremony to celebrate those who complete the journey.
What Will We Study?
The curriculum focuses on the doctrine of the church, covering essential topics such as:
- The nature and purpose of the church
- Church ministry philosophy
- The role of members within the church
- Baptism and the Lord’s Supper
- Evangelism
- Church leadership
- How women can thrive in the church
- Church discipline
- The authority of Scripture in church life
- An introduction to church-based biblical counseling and one-another ministry
Each in-person session will follow a Socratic teaching method, incorporating instructor-led lectures, interactive group discussions, case studies, and more. The goal of this cohort is not merely to impart academic knowledge but to allow the rich theology of God's Word to transform hearts, deepen worship, and instill a greater love for one of God's greatest institutions—the local church.
Who Should Apply?
This cohort is open to all covenant members in good standing, as well as those currently in the membership process.
What If I Feel Underqualified?
Regardless of your level of theological knowledge or spiritual maturity, this cohort will be a valuable experience. Whether you are a new believer or have been walking with Christ for decades, you will find encouragement and growth. If you’ve never read a book on theology or if you hold a degree in biblical studies, you will both benefit and contribute to the learning of others. If you have concerns, we encourage you to speak with an elder to gain clarity and make an informed decision.
How Much Does It Cost?
The cost is approximately $100 per student, which covers all required books. There are no additional fees.
What Will Be Expected of Me?
We expect all students to commit fully to the program. This may require rearranging certain extracurricular activities to ensure maximum benefit. As elders, we are confident that dedicating six months to studying God’s design for the church will be a worthwhile investment of your time.
This cohort is not for those who are merely curious about a new church program or want to “test it out.” If you are not committed to completing the readings and engaging in discussions, this program is not for you. We will graciously but firmly hold each participant accountable to their commitment, as we desire every student to experience the full benefit of the cohort.
Does Completing the Cohort Make Me a Church Leader?
No, completing the Redeemer Institute does not automatically place you in a leadership role. However, all prospective ministry leaders—including small group leaders, teachers, deacons, and elders—are expected to complete this training.
A good example is Paul giving the qualifications of a deacon in 1 Tim 3:10. Paul states, "They must also be tested first; if they prove blameless, then they can serve as deacons." This is a helpful rubric to follow when it comes to appointing various church leaders. Paul emphasizes the importance of testing individuals before they take on leadership roles, ensuring they demonstrate integrity and faithfulness.
Although Paul does not specify what type of testing is to take place, at a minimum, the candidate’s personal background, reputation, and theological positions should be examined. A part of our season of testing is the RDMR Institute, which affords us as elders the opportunity to watch a student's life and doctrine closely (1 Tim 4:16). We desire the leaders of our church to love God and His people, handle Scripture faithfully, and exemplify Christ-like servant leadership, displaying the fruits of the Spirit.
If you’re not seeking a leadership role in the church but want to deepen your understanding of God’s Word and develop a strong theology of the church, this cohort is also for you.
